Charleston Mourns Zoe Hyman, 24, Fearless Artist and ‘Miracle’ Whose Organ Donation Gives Life After Fatal Brain Clots

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Charleston arts community and beyond are mourning the loss of Zoe Hyman, a vibrant and deeply original 24-year-old artist whose fearless creativity and authenticity left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Hyman died after battling devastating brain blood clots for a week, her family said. Throughout her final days, she was surrounded by family, friends, and her fiancé, Edward Black, who “never stopped believing in her strength.”
Born prematurely at 27 weeks on December 7, 2000, and weighing less than two pounds, Zoe spent her first three months fighting for her life in the MUSC NICU. Twenty-five years later, family say, she faced her final battle with the same determination that defined her from the very beginning.
“Zoe’s story was extraordinary from the very beginning,” her loved ones shared. “Her very existence was a miracle.”
A talented artist and free spirit, Zoe expressed herself boldly through her artwork, her style, and her unique perspective on the world. She was known in Charleston for her kindness, humor, and the way she made people feel seen. “Anyone who met Zoe remembers she had a way of making an impression that lasted long after a conversation ended,” her family said. “She lived boldly, loved fiercely, and remained true to herself in every way.”
She was deeply loved by her parents, Phillip and Kay Hyman, and by Edward Black, the love of her life and fiancé. As an only child, Zoe was the center of her family’s world, and her loss leaves a void that can never be filled.
In her final act of generosity, Zoe made the courageous decision to donate her organs. “Knowing that her life will help others live fully brings a small bit of peace to our profound grief,” her family said.
Friends and family are now asking for support to help with funeral, cremation, memorial, and related expenses. “If Zoe ever shared her art with you, made you laugh, offered friendship when you needed it, or simply brightened your day by being herself, we ask that you consider making a donation in her memory,” they said.
If you are unable to donate, loved ones ask that you share her story and keep Zoe’s family, Edward, and everyone who loved her in your thoughts and prayers.
Zoe Hyman was 24. She was a daughter, a fiancée, an artist, and a miracle — remembered for a life lived fearlessly, authentically, and with love.
