ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — A Rockdale County community is grieving the loss of one of its own after Firefighter Juan A. Smith was killed Friday when a Rockdale County Fire Rescue truck overturned at a local intersection while he was on duty.
The rollover crash happened about 5 p.m. at the intersection of Sigman Road and Eastview Road, county officials said. The fire apparatus left the roadway and came to rest on its side. Smith was among the firefighters aboard the truck. Authorities have not yet released details about other possible injuries.
Gov. Brian Kemp identified the fallen firefighter as Juan Antonia Smith and offered condolences Saturday to his family and fellow first responders. “We are heartbroken for Firefighter Smith’s loved ones and the entire Rockdale County Fire Rescue family,” Kemp said in a statement. “He died serving his community, and Georgia will not forget his sacrifice.”
Rockdale County leaders called Smith’s death a “devastating loss” and said the county is “heartbroken” over the tragedy. Flags have been ordered to half-staff at county facilities in his honor.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating what caused the apparatus to overturn. Traffic near Sigman and Eastview roads was diverted for hours Friday evening as heavy-duty tow trucks worked to remove the damaged engine and crash reconstruction teams documented the scene.
Firefighters across the state are mourning a brother lost in the line of duty. Smith’s fellow crew members describe him as dedicated, brave, and committed to the job he loved.
“He answered every call,” a department colleague said. “Today, we’re answering for him — with prayers for his family and with the promise that we’ll never forget.”
Officials said additional information, including funeral arrangements, will be released as it becomes available.
Firefighter Juan A. Smith died doing what he was called to do: protecting others. He will be remembered for his service, his courage, and the ultimate sacrifice he made for Rockdale County.
