GRAND BLANC TWP., Mich. — A Flint family and the Henry Ford Genesys Hospital community are mourning the sudden loss of Jeffrey Johnson, a 51-year-old security guard who died Thursday evening after his vehicle plunged into a pond on the hospital campus.
Grand Blanc Township police and fire crews were dispatched shortly before 6:30 p.m. to the hospital grounds after reports of an occupied vehicle submerged in about 10 feet of water, officials said.
First responders wasted no time. Three police officers, three firefighters, and two citizens entered the water and pulled Johnson from the vehicle. He was in cardiac arrest when rescuers reached him. Paramedics immediately began lifesaving measures before rushing him to the hospital’s emergency department, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said preliminary findings indicate Johnson may have suffered a medical emergency before his vehicle left the roadway and entered the pond. He was on duty at the time of the incident.
His employer, Teachout Security Solutions, confirmed his death in a Facebook post, calling it a “tremendous loss” and remembering Johnson as a dedicated member of their team.
“Jeffrey was committed to keeping people safe,” the company wrote. “We are heartbroken and asking for prayers for his family.”
The crash drew a large emergency response and left hospital staff and visitors shaken. The pond sits near the main entrance of Henry Ford Genesys Hospital, a place Johnson was working to protect.
The incident remains under investigation by Grand Blanc Township Police, with assistance from the Genesee County and Oakland County sheriff’s offices.
