JAFFREY, N.H. — A Massachusetts man tragically passed away Saturday afternoon after suffering a medical emergency while hiking on Mount Monadnock.
The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Joshua Luth of Lancaster, Massachusetts, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers.
Emergency Response on the Trail
The incident began around 4:11 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2026. Mountain Patrol Rangers at Monadnock State Park were alerted to a solo hiker in distress on the Cascade Link Trail, roughly three-quarters of a mile from Park Headquarters on Poole Road.
Good Samaritans discovered Luth on the trail and immediately called 911. As his condition rapidly deteriorated, the bystanders initiated CPR before rescuers arrived.
Conservation Officers rushed to the scene and requested additional assistance from local emergency and fire departments due to the remote location.
A Massive Inter-Agency Effort
A large-scale rescue operation was launched, drawing first responders from across the region to assist in evacuation and resuscitation efforts. Agencies aiding in the response included the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Jaffrey Police Department, and the Cheshire County Sheriff’s Dispatch Office.
Fire and rescue crews from Jaffrey, Rindge, Peterborough, Dublin, Troy, Keene, and New Ipswich responded, along with Southwestern New Hampshire District Fire Mutual Aid. Medical support was provided by Greatbrook Ambulance, Jaffrey Rindge Memorial Ambulance, and Massachusetts Lifeflight.
“Despite the best efforts of all involved, the hiker succumbed to the medical event he sustained while hiking,” Fish and Game officials said in a statement.
Joshua Luth was pronounced deceased at the scene. The exact cause of the medical emergency remains under investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Monadnock State Park officials remind hikers to know their limits, carry water, and hike with a partner when possible, especially during warmer months.
