ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed by her detective boyfriend in an apparent murder-suicide early Sunday morning while the couple was vacationing with other law enforcement officers in a Florida rental home.
Deputy Abigail Bieber, 30, was found dead inside a rental in the Butler Beach area of St. Augustine alongside her boyfriend, Detective Daniel Leyden. Leyden was also pronounced dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to preliminary reports.
Other deputies who were vacationing with the couple told investigators they heard arguing from a bedroom before shots rang out. No one else was physically injured.
Bieber had served with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office since 2018. She is remembered today as a compassionate deputy who dedicated her life to protecting others, especially children and victims of abuse. Colleagues said Abby became known for her kindness, empathy, and unwavering commitment to her community.
“Abby showed up for people on their worst days and treated every victim with dignity,” a fellow deputy said. “She lived to serve. We’re heartbroken.”
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Sunday mourning her loss: “Deputy Abigail Bieber embodied what it means to wear this uniform. Her compassion, strength, and dedication to service touched countless lives. We ask the community to keep her family, friends, and our agency in your prayers.”
Abigail Bieber’s legacy continues to live on through the lives she touched on and off duty, the agency said.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the murder-suicide. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is assisting.
Information regarding services for Deputy Bieber will be shared by her family and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office when available.
