Milwaukee Father of Five, Juan Mejia, 38, Drowns in Nagawicka Lake During Family Outing in Delafield

DELAFIELD, Wis. — A day at the lake turned to tragedy Saturday afternoon when a Milwaukee father of five drowned while swimming in Nagawicka Lake, leaving his family and community heartbroken.
The Waukesha County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Juan Mejia, 38, of Milwaukee. Family members say Mejia was a father of four children, with a fifth on the way.
Emergency crews were called shortly after 12:30 p.m. Saturday to the Nagawicka County Boat Launch for a report of a possible drowning, the Delafield Police Department said in a news release. A dive team searched the water for hours before Mejia’s body was recovered, officials said.
The medical examiner responded to the scene, and the boat launch was temporarily closed during the recovery and investigation, police said.
Loved ones described Mejia as a devoted father who had been enjoying a day at the lake when the incident occurred.
“My uncle tragically passed away in a drowning accident, leaving our family heartbroken and facing unexpected challenges,” the Mejia family shared in a fundraiser. “He was a beloved member of our family and community, always ready to lend a hand or share a smile. His sudden loss has left us not only grieving, but also struggling to cover the costs associated with his funeral and memorial services.”
Friends say Mejia was known for his work ethic, his generosity, and his love for his children. He leaves behind four kids and a wife expecting their fifth.
The Delafield Police Department and Waukesha County officials continue to investigate the circumstances of the drowning. Authorities remind lake visitors to exercise caution, swim in designated areas, and use life jackets when on the water.
Juan Mejia was 38. He was a son, a brother, an uncle, and a father whose life ended far too soon on what was meant to be a summer day with family.
