HYATTSVILLE, Md. — Family members, friends, and community members are mourning the tragic death of 46-year-old Nolberto Meza, who was killed after a police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle ended in a deadly crash on the William Howard Taft Bridge in Northwest Washington, D.C.
According to investigators, the incident began Saturday evening around 5:35 p.m. when U.S. Park Police observed a stolen silver 2014 Honda Accord near Rock Creek Parkway and Virginia Avenue NW. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly refused to pull over and fled at high speed, leading authorities on a dangerous pursuit through city streets.
Officials say the pursuit continued along Connecticut Avenue and onto the Taft Bridge, where the fleeing vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck Meza, who was traveling on a moped. The impact of the collision threw Meza onto the roadway, causing catastrophic injuries.
Despite immediate response efforts from D.C. Fire and EMS personnel, Meza was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators reported that the suspect vehicle did not stop after the collision and continued traveling until it struck an occupied Toyota RAV4 on Kalorama Road NW. The driver and two passengers then fled on foot before being apprehended by U.S. Park Police and the U.S. Marshals Service.
Authorities have identified the driver as 24-year-old Tomas Anderson of Northeast Washington, who has been charged with second-degree murder. Two passengers, including a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old from Maryland, also face charges related to unauthorized use of a vehicle. The investigation remains ongoing.
