The family of a man charged in the fatal shooting of a young nurse in a hospital parking lot has filed a lawsuit against the hospital, alleging he was denied psychiatric evaluation and treatment just hours before the deadly attack.
The lawsuit, filed by attorney Mike Comer on behalf of Amanda Taylor, the mother of 41-year-old Matthew Taylor, claims that DCH Regional Medical Center was negligent in its handling of Taylor on May 12 and turned him away when he sought help for a mental health crisis.
Taylor is charged with capital murder during a robbery in the death of 27-year-old Ada Doss, a nurse who was shot and killed as she was leaving work that afternoon at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.
According to the lawsuit, Taylor’s family believes the tragedy may have been prevented had he received proper psychiatric evaluation and treatment. The complaint alleges hospital staff failed to intervene despite signs that Taylor was experiencing a severe mental health episode.
DCH officials strongly dispute those claims. In a statement responding to the lawsuit, hospital representatives said Taylor never entered the emergency department or any other hospital facility, was never registered as a patient, and never sought medical care from DCH on the day of the shooting.
Investigators with law enforcement have previously echoed that account, stating that Taylor never entered the hospital or emergency room and instead remained on the hospital campus for several hours before the fatal encounter.
The lawsuit adds a new and emotional dimension to a case that shocked the community and devastated the family, friends, and colleagues of Doss, who was remembered as a compassionate healthcare worker dedicated to caring for others.
The legal battle is expected to center on whether the hospital had any opportunity or responsibility to provide care to Taylor before the tragedy unfolded.
The case remains pending, and Taylor continues to face capital murder charges in connection with Doss’ death.
