WILLARD, Ohio — The Willard community is grieving the sudden loss of Makenzie Rebecca Sykes, 18, who passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

Born October 24, 2007, in Norwalk, Ohio, to Teresa (Lutz) Sykes and Bryan Sykes, Makenzie was a proud 2026 graduate of Willard High School. She had dreams of becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician and was known for her compassion, drive, and deep love for animals.

During her time at WHS, Makenzie’s impact was felt across campus. She was actively involved in Student Council, National Honor Society, and Teen Leadership Corps. A talented musician, she played in the Orchestra and String Quartet and sang with the Symphonic Choir. On the field and court, she competed as a Lady Flashes tennis and softball player, where teammates remember her determination and team-first spirit.

“Makenzie did it all — and she did it with heart,” one teacher said. “She showed up for her classmates, for her school, and for every animal she met. She was going to make an incredible vet tech. We’re heartbroken.”

Friends describe her as kind, hardworking, and the person who always made others feel included. Her laugh, her loyalty, and her fierce love for her family and pets left a mark on everyone who knew her.

Makenzie is survived by her parents, Teresa and Bryan Sykes, along with extended family, friends, classmates, and teachers who are mourning a life taken far too soon.

The Willard High School community has made counselors available for students and staff as they process this loss.

Makenzie’s family asks for privacy and prayers as they navigate this unimaginable grief.

May she rest in peace.
