MINNESOTA — Today marks one year since Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were assassinated in their home, a loss that continues to reverberate through Minnesota’s statehouse, their community, and the family they left behind.
Melissa was a dedicated public servant who worked every day to improve the lives of Minnesotans, colleagues said. Her commitment to her community was matched only by her devotion to her family. She and Mark are survived by their children, Sophie and Colin.
“Being elected to serve our communities should never be life-threatening,” a close friend said Saturday, reflecting on the anniversary. “From state legislatures to the White House, it’s time for our leaders to stand against armed political violence. That should never have cost Melissa or Mark their lives.”
Friends described Melissa as tireless, principled, and deeply invested in the people she represented. Mark was remembered as her steadfast partner — supportive, kind, and proud of the work she did for Minnesota.
In the year since their deaths, vigils and remembrances have been held across the state. Advocates have renewed calls to protect public servants and condemn political violence, noting that threats against elected officials have escalated in recent years.
“My heart is in Minnesota and with Sophie, Colin, and the entire Hortman family as they continue to grieve this tragic loss,” the friend said. “We remember Melissa and Mark not for how they died, but for how they lived — with service, with love, and with courage.”
Law enforcement investigations into the assassination remain ongoing. Officials have not released further details as the family requests privacy.
The Hortmans’ legacy is one of public service and family. Their deaths are a painful reminder of the human cost of political violence — and of the urgent need to ensure that serving a community never means risking a life.
