GARDENDALE, Ala. — Family members, friends, and the Gardendale community are mourning the tragic loss of Alfred J. Harkley, who died after a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 Saturday afternoon. He was 48 years old.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the fatal crash occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on Interstate 65, about one mile north of Fultondale. Authorities said Harkley was driving an SUV when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a light pole. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Harkley to UAB Hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he later succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash.
