CULLOWHEE, N.C. — Western Carolina Athletics and the Catamount football community are mourning the passing of Kent Briggs, a former quarterback, assistant coach, and head coach whose long-standing commitment to the program left a lasting legacy.
Briggs, 68, passed away Friday evening, leaving behind a football family and university community deeply saddened by the loss of a man widely regarded as a true Catamount. His passing has prompted an outpouring of remembrance from former players, colleagues, and supporters of Western Carolina football.
A dedicated figure in the program’s history, Briggs served as an assistant coach for nine seasons and later returned to lead his alma mater as head coach from 2002 to 2007. Over the course of his career, he spent 15 years with Western Carolina, contributing significantly to the development and identity of the Catamount football program.
