NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — With deep sadness and respect, the skateboarding community is mourning the tragic passing of Rio O’Byrne, a gifted young skateboarder associated with Rock Solid Dist., who died suddenly this week.
O’Byrne’s untimely death has left family, friends, teammates, and the wider skateboarding community in profound grief. At an age when most are just beginning to find their path, Rio had already earned recognition for his talent, drive, and presence on and off the board.
Those who knew him describe a skater who combined raw ability with humility. Teammates at Rock Solid Dist. said Rio pushed himself and those around him to progress, but never lost the joy that drew him to skateboarding in the first place. “He made it look effortless, but you knew how hard he worked,” said one fellow rider. “More than that, he was a good kid. Respectful. Always hyping other people up.”
In NoHo and beyond, local skaters are sharing clips, photos, and memories of sessions with Rio — at parks, in the streets, and during Rock Solid Dist. events. Many spoke of his style, his commitment, and the way he carried himself as part of the next generation of Southern California skateboarding.
The cause of death has not been publicly released. The family has asked for privacy as they grieve.
For a community built on camaraderie and resilience, the loss of someone so young has hit especially hard. Vigils and memorial sessions are being organized by friends to honor Rio’s life and the mark he left on the skate scene.
Rio O’Byrne is remembered as a talented young skateboarder, a valued teammate, and a friend whose absence is now felt across the rails, ledges, and parks he loved.
He will be deeply missed by the Rock Solid Dist. family and the entire skateboarding community.
